The Case of Adolescent's Imaginative Narrative with Gestalt Art Therapy and Self-image Development

Abstract

|
This study was conducted to inquire the effects and meanings of imaginative narrative counseling model with Gestalt art therapy by applying the imaginative narrative counseling model to maladjusted adolescents. It is a descriptive study of single-case which describes the counseling process, client's psychological problem, resolving symptoms and the changing process of self-esteem. The subject was the 3rd grade student with physical symptoms, nightmares and maladjusted problems in high school, and the researcher applied the model to that person. The applying period was from March 7th in 2009 to April 11th in 2011. This study was performed by qualitative research method and was analyzed by narrative inquiry method. Quantitative research was combined, and pre and post test were conducted through the measurement of self-esteem and self-identity scale. The conclusions described linguistic interaction process between the client and the psychology counselor through this counseling technique and the changing process of client’s narratives was reconstituted in theoretical view of Gestalt. As a result of applying the model, client's unfinished businesses appeared in the figure through the counseling processes. The client experienced his own feelings and incidents 'here and now' by looking deep into himself through a character and formed action-movement for constructing imaginative narrative. The cycle of awareness and contact was repeated and the figure and ground was continuously changing, developing client's self-image. Through this process, the client reconstructed his narrative and created a new self-narrative. Though the counseling process, client's psychological problem and symptoms were resolved and self-image was developed.
